Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT with Kids This Weekend July 13-14: Blueberry Picking, Fireworks, Sailfest and Live Music

7/11/13 - By Pam Hegner

When school is out during the summer, it is a good time to educate your children about the importance of supporting local farms. Our food travels an average distance of 1500 miles to reach our grocery stores, and that is a lot of gas used by trucks and airplanes.  Plus, produce loses nutrients the longer it sits after harvesting. Blueberry season is here, so get out and enhance your family's health and the local economy! We make it easy for you with our guide on Blueberry Picking in CT: Pick Your Own Farms. This weekend you can still see fireworks during Sailfest and also at Lime Rock Park. There are lots of festivals throughout the state as well.

Lyman Orchards in Middlefield celebrates Berry Fest this weekend. Pick berries, enjoy live music, face painting, pony rides, pie-eating contests and much more. Need some ice cream to go with those berries? Consult our post on Best Ice Cream Parlors in New London County for new ideas.

If you missed any 4th of July excitement last week, don't worry! Visit the Lime Rock Park Fireworks Extravaganza Saturday. Sailfest in New London also features an impressive fireworks display. There will also be live music, boat sailings, kids' rides and activities, street vendors and more. This three-day festival is very popular, and attracts over 300,000 people, so you'll want to arrive early! If you like boats, then you'll want to check out the Float Your Boat Regatta on Bantam Lake. See how creative the construction can get, and there will be plenty of food and fun for all ages.

While you are out and about this summer, you'll probably want to get some food on the go. Restaurants Where Kids Eat Free in Central CT  and Family-Friendly Restaurants in New Haven County will help you save time, money and sanity.
