What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Fairfield County

Connecticut is a combination of accessible small cities, seacoast charm and rural New England beauty.

With Fairfield County's Gold Coast along the shoreline and the Housatonic Valley region there is much to offer. Containing 4 of the state's largest cities as well as a vibrant mix of small towns you can find museums, cultural activities, beaches, a maritime aquarium, zoos, and even the largest mall in New England.

Spring and Summer Sporting Events in CT

Things to do with kids: Spring and Summer Sporting Events in CT

Having sat through 3 soccer games and 2 lacrosse games today (just a regular Saturday around here!), it seems only fitting that I sit down now to write about…athletic events!  Now, my kids didn’t catch the sports bug super early.  Nope, mine were the kids picking daisies in the midst of the kindergarten soccer field as the ball sailed right past them.

But this year, in 4th grade, my eldest has suddenly become sports obsessed.   And she’s not only obsessed with playing sports – she loves following them too.   Need Red Sox scores? She’s got ‘em.  Want to know if Chelsea beat Man U?  Look no further.  And as much as I love the Sox and Chelsea, Boston and London aren’t always so easy to get to, so we’ve found some local sports events to frequent.  Some of our spring and summer favorites:

Springtime Visits to Baby Farm Animals in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Springtime Visits to Baby Farm Animals in Fairfield County, CT

Pretty much everything farm related makes me sneeze.  And itch.  And cough.  But in spite of my immune’s systems obvious distaste for all things farm related, I cannot help it…I love visiting area farms this time of year to see all the new, ADORABLE, animals that have been born.  And I'm guessing I'm not the only one!  Pick a beautiful day, and head out to visit some of Fairfield County’s newest - and furriest - residents at some of the following locations:

Mother's Day Fun in Fairfield County, Connecticut

Things to do with kids: Mother's Day Fun in Fairfield County, Connecticut

It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming…Mother’s Day!  The one day a year when my children are required by law, tradition, expectation, whatever, to treat me like a queen.  And just in case they haven’t been preparing for the big day with the same fervor that I have, I’ve compiled a list of activities that will make the 2013 Mother’s Day one to remember!

Free Events and Activities in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Free Events and Activities in Fairfield County, CT

Hmm.  April has come and gone, and with it, my tax check to Uncle Sam and his friend, the Connecticut State Treasurer.  Ouch. This year, I figured I’d look around and see where all those taxes are going.  Low and behold, I’ve found several low cost – and even FREE! – family friendly opportunities here in southern CT, some of which are made possible in part by that painful April check writing.  Thanks, Uncle Sam!

Autism Support In Fairfield County

Things to do with kids: Autism Support In Fairfield County

In second grade, my daughter often talked about her classmate Robert.  Robert, who remained in our public school system through second grade, struggled with the nebulous diagnosis of being “somewhere on the autism spectrum”.  He’s a great kid – with a great family – and I watched and marveled as they worked tirelessly to help Robert navigate his way through school, friendships, and growing up.

Robert’s mother, who is thoughtful, tireless, patient, strong and grateful, told me how much support they’ve had from the Connecticut community as they’ve explored the world of autism with Robert.  It has made me appreciate again how lucky we are to live in an age and place of both relative social acceptance and medical phenomena.  There is no doubt that my life and my daughter’s have been enriched and strengthened for knowing Robert and his family, and their struggles and victories.

If you have a child who may be grappling with autism, there are many, many resources in the Fairfield County area to explore.  Here's a list to get you started:

10 Great Things to do in Fairfield County this Spring

Things to do with kids: 10 Great Things to do in Fairfield County this Spring

Clearly the dramatic weather changes are confusing all of us a bit. Yesterday my youngest sauntered off to the bus wearing Daisy Duke shorts with hand me down Ugg boots and miss-matched mittens.  Is it winter? Spring?  SUMMER???

Well, despite the 75 plus degrees here in CT earlier this week, it is officially springtime, which may well be my favorite season.  Below you'll find a list of some of this family’s favorite things to do in Fairfield County this spring – and whether you’re wearing Uggs or flip flops, I bet you’ll enjoy a few of these outings too!:

Fantastic Shopping Excursion to SoNo Marketplace in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Fantastic Shopping Excursion to SoNo Marketplace in Fairfield County, CT

Ugh.  Here I was trying to think of a fantastic spring day trip to take with my nearly ten year old and where does she ask to go? THE MALL!!!!.  The birthplace of bad spending habits and teenage attitudes.  Bastion of bad taste and fast food.  Anywhere, I said to my teeny bopper, anywhere but the mall.

Naturally, the more I argued against it, the more my pre-teen daughter wanted that trip to the mall.  Fast forward several arguments and a battle of wills, and we found a brilliant – brilliant!- alternative … South Norwalk’s SoNo Marketplace.

This new, dare I say hip, market is a converted old warehouse in South Norwalk, and its more than 40 vendors offer gourmet food, gifts, clothing, art and toys.  The vendors are largely located in stalls throughout the space, and there are great indoor and outdoor spaces for dining and relaxing.

Horseback Riding Camps in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Horseback Riding Camps in Fairfield County, CT

I am DELIGHTED that my 9-year old girl is far more interested in horses and dolphins than boys (not counting the boys of  One Direction, of course).  Needless to say, my husband is equally delighted.  And while I have been unable to find a dolphin riding camp in CT for this summer (her first choice), I have found lots of options for horseback riding camps in Fairfield County.  I'm hoping that one of these will fit our summer schedule and prolong her interest in horses rather than 10-year old boys.  Wish me luck!
