Planning a family vacation to Canada? Consider adding Nova Scotia to your list! My family, which includes three young children, just completed an amazing Canadian road trip where we tackled several territories. While it was tough, Nova Scotia was a very doable chunk of the trip. This peninsular territory is small, but it has quite a variable landscape filled with natural beauty.

To help you plan an exciting road trip to East Coast Canada with kids, I've put together a handy Nova Scotia travel guide for families. It includes 19 things to do in Nova Scotia with kids, including outdoor adventures in Nova Scotia for kids, Nova Scotia day trips with kids, and the best things to do in Halifax with kids.

Our Canada Family Travel Guide is full of more great places that will round out your Canadian vacation, including our fun list of things to do in Quebec with kids.

One of the biggest pleasures of fall is watching the leaves turn a variety of vibrant colors, and the Delaware Water Gap is an ideal place to take a fall foliage hike and admire the changing of the seasons.

Located on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the Delaware Water Gap is less than a two-hour drive from NYC, so it's close enough to make a great autumn daycation. The trees should start changing any day now, so keep these outings in mind for the upcoming fall school holidays.

Find more seasonal activities in our New Jersey Fall Fun Guide, which includes our story on the best fall day trips in and near New Jersey.

The murals throughout Quebec City provide fantastic photo ops.

Quebec City is often touted as a European vacation alternative—a picturesque city where you can walk cobblestone streets, sit in bistros, and order in French without a transatlantic plane ticket. And as the only walled city in North America and a UNESCO World Heritage site, this Canadian city is full of history.

There are also so many things to do in Quebec City with kids, including family-friendly museums, fun outdoor spaces, parks, fun festivals, and more. Read on for our Quebec City Family Travel Guide, which includes the best kid-friendly activities in Quebec City, as well as great family hotels and restaurants.

Planning to visit Quebec City as part of a longer Canada trip? Our Canada Family Travel Guide includes more fun Canadian cities to visit with kids, like Toronto and Vancouver.

The unique carousel swing at Laurel Acres Park is a big hit with kids.

A trip to Laurel Acres Park in Mount Laurel is sure to be an adventure for you and your family. You can plan a pick-up sand volleyball game, zipline, ride the swing carousel, visit three different playgrounds, fish, hike, or roll–or sled–down the giant hill.

In addition to all the built-in activities, the park hosts family events throughout the summer, so there is always plenty to do for multiple hours or over multiple trips.

Read on for a list of things to do on your family’s day trip to Laurel Acres Park! And, if you are going to be in South Jersey, check out our lists of Family-Friendly Hikes in South Jersey and Destination Playgrounds in South Jersey.

Visiting Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in DC with Kids

Your kiddos will be in awe of the size of this humongous African elephant I am in awe of its size. Photo by author Lisa Warden

Of all the spectacular museums in DC, Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History is my kids’ favorite! It is the one museum we must visit every time we go to DC even though it doesn’t have a dedicated kids' area. My children love seeing the dinosaur fossils, the gems, the enormous taxidermy African Elephant in the Main Hall (the biggest I have ever seen!), the giant squids on display in the Ocean Hall, and the Insect Zoo.

If your kids dig nature and science, they will love this museum, too. And the best part is, like most the other museums in DC, it is FREE!

Read on for a sneak peek into what to expect if you visit the National Museum of Natural History. Then check out our Museum Guide for Kids and Families in DC for more great museums to visit with kids, from free museums near DC to quirky museums and off-the-beaten-path gems.

I loved visiting Chincoteague, VA as a child—the land of wild ponies running free. None of my children share my love of horses, but I still felt amiss that we hadn’t taken a trip to Chincoteague as a family. So we finally headed down for a long weekend, and despite the miserable weather, we had a great time!

If your family loves nature, birds, ponies, rocket ships (you read that right), and/or beaches, it's time to start planning a Chincoteague family vacation. Read on for tips on visiting Chincoteague, VA with kids, from fun Chincoteague activities to Chincoteague kid-friendly restaurants. And since it is about three hours south of DC, we also share some great Chincoteague hotels for families.

Our Guide to Family Day Trips and Weekend Getaways for DC Kids has even more fun travel ideas, including our list of the best family road trips from DC.

Baby Swimming Lessons in NJ: A Guide for Parents in 2025

Lisa Warden's picture Submitted by Lisa Warden on Tue, 05/20/2025 - 6:30am

Take your little fishies to a class at Goldfish Swim School.

Summer is here, and whether you are joining a pool, going on vacation, heading to the Shore, or sending your kids off to camp, chances are that swimming is part of your plans. While your kids are still young, mommy-and-me swimming (or daddy-and-me) classes for infants and toddlers are a great way to carve out some special time for you and your child to bond while teaching water safety to babies.

These swimming lessons usually run for children 6-36 months—although some start even younger—and involve a parent in the water along with the child. Singing, toys, and water play are often incorporated into these swimming lessons to help children feel comfortable in the water and have fun while learning valuable water safety skills.

If you are interested in signing your infant or toddler up, read on for a description of swim clubs that offer these mommy-and-me classes throughout New Jersey.

For more mommy-and-me activities, see our review of the Best Mommy and Me Classes in NJ. Interested in classes for slightly older children? See our review of the best swimming lessons in NJ.
