What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Our Day Trip with the Kids to Old Saybrook, Connecticut

Our Day Trip with the Kids to Old Saybrook, Connecticut

I'd go on a day trip every weekend if I had it my way.  But we all know my way hit the highway once two tiny boys barrelled onto the scene.  But at some point, one decides to give way to the little voice in the noggin saying, 'How bad could it possibly go?', and you end up in Old Saybrook on a lovely, late summer day.

Fun Day Trips In and Around CT: Part 4 of a Series - Gillette Castle and Caumsett State Historic Park

Things to do with kids: Fun Day Trips In and Around CT: Part 4 of a Series - Gillette Castle and Caumsett State Historic Park

by Monika Nica

Gillette Castle, East Haddam, Middlesex County

Do you know that Connecticut has its very own fortress? Gillette Castle in East Haddam looks like a decoration from a fairy tale book, a real medieval castle. Its robust, dark gray stone walls, bastions and towers hide an eccentric and surprising fantasy world of hidden doorways, tricky pieces of furniture and quirky installation. Once a property of Sherlock Holmes actor, William Gillette, the fortress is now open to the public. Its generous park mirrors the castle: its winding trails lead through arched bridges and little tunnels along the path of the castle's private 3-mile long railroad with its own Grand Central Station. So if you are ready to share something extravagantly out-of-the-ordinary with your family, plan a trip to East Haddam's Seven Sisters Hills.

A Family's Day Visit to Mystic CT: Mystic Pizza, Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport

Things to do with kids: A Family's Day Visit to Mystic CT: Mystic Pizza, Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport

Thanks to our guest writer Amy Olson, mother of 4 who splits her time between Manhattan and Washington, CT.

The salty sea air, the sweet smell of pizza, and the giggles of children.  This is what awaited us in Mystic, Connecticut last week.

Mystic is a charming New England village nestled on Long Island sound, 1 hour southeast of Hartford, 3 hours east of New York City, and 2 hours south of Boston.

It was the perfect summer day trip for our family.  My husband and I first visited Mystic 10 years ago when our sons were just a toddler and an infant.  We’ve had two more children since then but haven’t been back.  So this time, we brought our four year old son on a special excursion.

We started our visit with lunch at the famous Mystic Pizza. Even if you’ve never seen the movie (who hasn’t), this restaurant boasts Hollywood memorabilia on every square inch of wall space to keep your eyes occupied while you wait for your meal. The portions are huge, so come hungry. Afterward, we took a stroll down Main Street for some tempting treats.

Fun Summer Vacation Literary Itinerary for Kids: Hartford to Boston

Things to do with kids: Fun Summer Vacation Literary Itinerary for Kids: Hartford to Boston

Wouldn't your little writer love visiting Louise May Alcott's Orchard House or Walden Pond this summer? What a great road trip for your tweens and teens! This itinerary given to me by Corrine Upton over at the Mark Twain House has covered it all starting in Hartford and finishing up in Boston. Over the course of five days (or less, for those who are ambitious), visit the birthplace of Mark Twain’s most famous characters, get inspired by Edith Wharton’s landscape design, and visit the gravesites of Thoreau, Hawthorne, Emerson and Alcott at Author’s Ridge at Sleepy Hollow.

Below, you'll find the full itinerary of a New England literary pilgrimage-- offering a unique, inspiring and educational summer vacation.

Day Trip: Travel Back In Time at The Dinosaur Place in Oakdale Connecticut

Things to do with kids: Day Trip: Travel Back In Time at The Dinosaur Place in Oakdale Connecticut

Thanks to a reader tip, we recently left the city and traveled back in time to wilds of Eastern Connecticut to spend the day at The Dinosaur Place at Nature’s Art, where kids can explore a family friendly Jurassic Park style attraction.  Encounter thirty life-sized cretaceous creatures while trekking the wooded nature trails around Raptor Bay, a seven acre lake complete with its own erupting volcano.  A giant playground, an amazing maze, a super cool water play area along with exciting indoor activities (panning for gold and gem mining to name two) round out the offerings. Dinosaur Place is minutes away from Mystic, Connecticut and Rhode Island's beaches making for a perfect day trip destination or part of a weekend away.  Here’s the inside scoop on this fun prehistoric park, and tips to make the most of your time there.
