What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Indoor Water Park and Swimming Pools in New Haven County

Things to do with kids: Indoor Water Park and Swimming Pools in New Haven County

When it’s 20 degrees out and your kids are “trying on” their summer swim suits you may think they are going crazy or have cabin fever!  Well, I’m not an expert, but I’m guessing the latter is the case.  Make their day and take them to one of the indoor swimming options I have found in New Haven County.  Your kids will thank you!

Coco Keys: Indoor Water Park in Waterbury, CT

Things to do with kids: Coco Keys: Indoor Water Park in Waterbury, CT

This is the perfect water park to visit regardless of weather: It’s always a warm and sunny 84 degrees at Coco Key!

Some of the highlights of Coco Key include a 50,000 Square Feet of Indoor Adventure, an Adventure River, three 40-Foot Body and Raft Rides, an Activity Pool with Water Basketball and Lily Pad Adventure, and the Parrot's Perch Interactive Play Island with Zero-Depth Entry Kiddie Area. When you’re ready to dry off the kids love to spend time in the Key Quest Arcade. There are choices for fun kid food on the premises: A&W and Pizza Hut Express, Gator’s Grab & Go and the Wet Rooster Bar. Try to beat the crowds and eat before or after the typical lunch rush. There is no outside food allowed in, except for baby food, which needs to be in plastic containers.

Connecticut Beaches and Water Fun Guide

Connecticut Beaches and Water Fun Guide

Did you know that Connecticut has 618 miles of coastline? That's a lot of beach territory! We won't pretend to include all of it in this guide but we'll keep adding to it so check back often. Being on the Long Island Sound you won't find big surf here however you will find calm relaxing water and scenic New England beauty. Of course we not only have beaches but beautiful lakes, rivers and ponds, not to mention great water parks and playgrounds too. Whatever you may be looking for you'll be sure to find something to suit your needs in this CT Beach and Water Fun Guide .

Spending the Day Canoeing Down the Farmington River in Avon, CT

Things to do with kids: Spending the Day Canoeing Down the Farmington River in Avon, CT

Last week I was looking to take the kids on a family adventure that would involve nature, water and lots of fun. I decided to take the family out for a canoe trip down the Farmington River. I had found Huck Finn Adventures, which has been guiding people down the river for nearly thirty years. They offer a 3, 5 or 9 mile trip. We opted for the three mile trip which ended up taking just under three hours! Turns out we could have walked to our destination in much less time but that wouldn't have been nearly as fun or beautiful, now would it?

We used our GPS to find the starting point and became a little confused when it led us into an Avon, CT shopping center. There's a dirt road right next to the center and that's where you want to go. You'll drive down a little bit before seeing the van, kayaks, canoes and life jackets. The owner John was there to greet us and give us the scoop on how our trip would proceed.

Water Attractions in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Water Attractions in Fairfield County, CT

My 7 year old recently told me she thought we should move somewhere cooler.  Like Florida, she elaborated.  Ahhh, a teaching moment, I thought... and proceeded to patiently explain climates, weather patterns and equatorial geographics to her.  With obvious disdain for my aged intellect (or lack thereof), she patiently listened, then hopped onto the weather app of my iphone and showed me the map on which CT temperatures registered 94, and Florida’s 91.

My point?  It’s hot here in CT this summer!  So, when we aren't going to one of  Connecticut's beaches,  we will be enjoying some of Fairfield County’s water adventures in the coming weeks.
