What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Spending the Day Canoeing Down the Farmington River in Avon, CT

Things to do with kids: Spending the Day Canoeing Down the Farmington River in Avon, CT

Last week I was looking to take the kids on a family adventure that would involve nature, water and lots of fun. I decided to take the family out for a canoe trip down the Farmington River. I had found Huck Finn Adventures, which has been guiding people down the river for nearly thirty years. They offer a 3, 5 or 9 mile trip. We opted for the three mile trip which ended up taking just under three hours! Turns out we could have walked to our destination in much less time but that wouldn't have been nearly as fun or beautiful, now would it?

We used our GPS to find the starting point and became a little confused when it led us into an Avon, CT shopping center. There's a dirt road right next to the center and that's where you want to go. You'll drive down a little bit before seeing the van, kayaks, canoes and life jackets. The owner John was there to greet us and give us the scoop on how our trip would proceed.

Our Tour of the Brand New Chelsea Piers Connecticut: Opening July 2012 in Stamford

Our Tour of the Brand New Chelsea Piers Connecticut: Opening July 2012 in Stamford

This week we were invited down to tour the new Chelsea Piers facility being built in Stamford. They are still under construction so we had to use our imagination a bit. It was all good. My gang of boys were thrilled to wear the bright yellow hard hats.

We know Chelsea Piers in NYC well. We used to live a  bike ride away and have spent many an hour playing soccer, ice skating and attending birthday parties there. When we found out they were expanding to CT we were super excited. 400,000 square feet of sporty fun all under one roof!

We were blown away, as the pictures clearly show the expressions on the boys' faces. Two Ice Skating rinks with a heated sitting area for parents as well as a restaurant that looks out onto the rink! A trampoline park and rock climbing wall - yes, a large area that has a trampoline as the floor! A ball pit, huge gymnastics area, an Olympic sized swimming pool that includes a hydraulic floor that can be lifted or lowered to your desired height. A water slide area that even the grown ups want to play in. Soccer, basketball, squash, tennis, water polo, volleyball you name it. They've got it.

Free Tutoring and Homework Help Resources for Connecticut Kids

Things to do with kids: Free Tutoring and Homework Help Resources for Connecticut Kids

Many families are searching for ways to cut back on expenditures in order to stay within the family budget. Tutoring is one of those things that some children absolutely need yet it can be quite expensive. Parents should check into their local library to see if they offer services of some kind. For example, The New Milford Library has a homework help page that includes coverage of most topics including math, science, history and music. They even have a long list of homework help links. At the New Haven Free Public Library they provide reference assistance, homework help and readers advisory at the Young Adult desk weekdays after school. Call Sunnie at (203) 946-8130 ext. 234 for assistance.

The Fairfield Public Library launched a new program this Fall for students of all ages: live, one-to-one help from certified tutors online 24/7. Any patron with a valid Fairfield Public Library card can access the online services from the library or right from home.  A resume writing service is also available. The service is completely free for the Fairfield community.
