What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Having Kids Volunteer in the Wake of Tragedy

Things to do with kids: Having Kids Volunteer in the Wake of Tragedy

Ugh…over the past six months I've gotten way too practiced in trying to explain tragedy and evil to my kids.  And who am I kidding?  I have no idea why some jerk feels the need to kill and maim hundreds of innocent people as they partake in the festivities at the Boston Marathon.  But while I can’t understand the motivations of those who choose to hurt, I do know what makes me feel better in the face of evil: adding to the goodness in the world through volunteerism.   It seemed a natural assumption for my husband and me that being a part of the “good” could also make our kids feel less scared, more empowered, and more engaged in the world - particularly when events like the Newtown shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing leave them feeling scared and vulnerable.

It’s not always easy to find ways that kids can partake in volunteerism in a meaningful way.  But here are a few that we’ve found:

Things to do with kids: Patty Lennon, CT Mom and Coach, Discusses her Upcoming Mom Gets a Biz Conference

Patty Lennon is the CEO and Founder of Mom Gets a Life & Mom Gets A Business. She is a mom advocate, coach, writer and speaker based here in CT. Patty thinks it is important for moms to care for their own needs while raising their children. She speaks with hundreds and hundreds of women across the country each year and inevitably what she hears is that moms know exactly what they need to make their lives better… they just don’t have the money to make it happen.

Ways to Help Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Newtown, CT Community

Things to do with kids: Ways to Help Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Newtown, CT Community

So many of us are left to try to make sense of a tragedy that can never be made sense of. We are left to console, support and love our families, friends and neighbors through this unthinkable pain. So many want to help, to do something that will make a difference. Within just one week three million dollars was raised for the Newtown Community.  A 5K race is being organized, fundraisers by local businesses and support forums are all listed here as well as two long standing non-profit Newtown organizations that are ready to receive your help.

Hurricane Sandy: How to Prepare and Have Fun With CT Kids While Stuck at Home

Things to do with kids: Hurricane Sandy: How to Prepare and Have Fun With CT Kids While Stuck at Home

I happened to be in San Diego this weekend for a family wedding and was worrying that our return flight on Sunday had a good chance of being canceled. Lucky for me (or unlucky, however you want to look at it) our flight went without a hitch and we arrived at 4pm right before JFK canceled all of their domestic flights. On the way home to CT we made a point to fill up the car with fuel and to stop by the grocery for "power outage food", mainly chips, fruit, water, cookies, almond milk and cereal. I also hit up the ATM to have cash on hand. I plan to cook up soup and some meat tomorrow morning so that it doesn't go to waste and is edible these upcoming days. You see, embarrassingly enough, even after Irene's wrath last year we still don't have a generator! When the power goes out you can find us all huddled by the fireplace roasting marshmallows. Many along the coast have been evacuated due to anticipated heavy flooding, mass transit is closed as well as most schools. We're all in this together. Might as well make the most of it while we can and prepare for safety's (and sanity's) sake. Our NYC site has a great post with lots of ideas on ways to keep busy and have fun with the kids during the storm.

Going Back to School: 4 Tips on How to Start Off the School Year With Success

Things to do with kids: Going Back to School: 4 Tips on How to Start Off the School Year With Success

Julie A. Ross, our guest writer and the Executive Director of Parenting Horizons, is a mom and the author of three parenting books. She runs numerous parenting workshops and events throughout the metropolitan area.

For many children, going back to school evokes a mixture of feelings: anticipation, excitement and apprehension, among others. As school approaches, we need to help our children make the transition with as little stress and anxiety as possible.
