What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Drama Classes for your Kids in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Drama Classes for your Kids in Fairfield County, CT

Multiple Choice.  Your child: A) confuses all sources of light with limelight, B) is woefully shy, but shocked everyone (not least of all, you) with his breakout performance at last year's Christmas pageant, or C) doesn't enjoy physical/mental activity of the sporting sort.  If you chose A, B or C, drama lessons might be the plot twist your child's after-school routine needs!  Actually, an expert in Parents magazine this month explains any kid can benefit from a little drama, saying "one landmark study found children involved in the arts for nine hours a week are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement."  That's the sort of return on results you want before investing in another extracurricular activity.

Best Baby Classes (Fairfield County)

Things to do with kids: Best Baby Classes (Fairfield County)

Once baby has made it past those first milestones, and that scary-if-they-get-an-infection phase, the two of you may start craning around for something to do ... out in that great big world. No doubt, the wilds of the living room and backyard were plenty stimulation for generations past, but these days parents can point to mountains of research on baby brain development to justify signing up for all sorts of classes.

Litchfield Jazz Festival Summer Camp and Giveaway: Win a 4 Pack of Lawn Tickets

Things to do with kids: Litchfield Jazz Festival Summer Camp and Giveaway: Win a 4 Pack of Lawn Tickets

If your musical child is into jazz they won't want to miss the Litchfield Jazz Camp this summer. Nestled in the Litchfield Hills on the beautiful Kent School campus, the Litchfield Jazz Camp is one of the most highly regarded jazz summer programs in the nation. Its music director, saxophonist, composer and educator Don Braden, is a major figure on the jazz scene. Braden has played with jazz greats Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, and Betty Carter and composed for Bill Cosby’s projects. He has headed the program for 15 years. Camp faculty includes renowned performers.

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Music and Food in CT (Fairfield County)

Things to do with kids: Celebrating St. Patrick's Day with Music and Food in CT (Fairfield County)

St Patrick’s Day in CT!

March 17th brings out the Irish in all of us – even in those of who can’t claim even a drop of Irish blood!  There are lots of ways to celebrate the day, but a few of the most traditional (or so my Irish husband tells me) are feasting on corn beef and cabbage, reveling in some Irish music, or enjoying a parade.  Happily, there are lots of places in Fairfield County where you can celebrate St. Patty’s day in one of these traditional ways…as well as in a few less traditional ways.

Tween Concerts: Summer Jam Live at Stepping Stones Museum

Things to do with kids: Tween Concerts: Summer Jam Live at Stepping Stones Museum

Last week my boys and I had the pleasure of attending our first tween concert at Stepping Stones Museum's Summer Jam Live.  Lil P-Nut is an 8 year old rapper who has been featured on the “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and currently has a deal with Cartoon Network. The boys and their friends were mesmerized as he rapped about elementary school and puppy love. When asked to have their photo taken in front of the sponsor wall the boys said they felt like they were "on the red carpet". The next day, when I saw the photo on Stepping Stone's Facebook page I couldn't help but giggle at the excitement and awkwardness in their smiles.
