What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

CT Summer Fun Expo: Family Fun in Connecticut This Summer

Things to do with kids: CT Summer Fun Expo: Family Fun in Connecticut This Summer

We are super excited to announce our first organized event here at Mommy Poppins CT. We've partnered with the Westfield CT Post mall to create a Summer Fun Expo for CT families. We are thrilled to be offering a one stop option for learning about places to have fun in CT this summer. The expo is Sunday, June 3rd from 11-4 pm in the food court area of the mall. If you drive past Target and Dick's Sporting Goods to the back parking lot, head up the ramp to the 2nd level for the closest parking to our event. There will be lots of fun for the kids including organized arts and crafts as well as entertainment by Lynn Lewis and Friends from 11:!5 to noon.

Thanksgiving Books and Games: For Your Children and Family

Things to do with kids: Thanksgiving Books and Games: For Your Children and Family

The weather is crispy, the evenings are long and dark, but the winter holidays are upon us. Why not get into the holiday spirit by curling up with your little ones on the sofa of the brightly lit, warm living room, with hot chocolate and a good, sweet, colorfully decorated holiday book? This Thanksgiving season you can read about silly turkeys, pay a visit to the Pilgrims, their Native-American neighbors or a fellow American family preparing for their Thanksgiving.

Fun Summer Vacation Literary Itinerary for Kids: Hartford to Boston

Things to do with kids: Fun Summer Vacation Literary Itinerary for Kids: Hartford to Boston

Wouldn't your little writer love visiting Louise May Alcott's Orchard House or Walden Pond this summer? What a great road trip for your tweens and teens! This itinerary given to me by Corrine Upton over at the Mark Twain House has covered it all starting in Hartford and finishing up in Boston. Over the course of five days (or less, for those who are ambitious), visit the birthplace of Mark Twain’s most famous characters, get inspired by Edith Wharton’s landscape design, and visit the gravesites of Thoreau, Hawthorne, Emerson and Alcott at Author’s Ridge at Sleepy Hollow.

Below, you'll find the full itinerary of a New England literary pilgrimage-- offering a unique, inspiring and educational summer vacation.

Preparing for Kindergarten: Five Books to Help Children Transition

Things to do with kids: Preparing for Kindergarten: Five Books to Help Children Transition

[UPDATED: August 10, 2012]

Last year at this time you may have been wracked with anxiety about finding your child the right preschool or elementary school. Now all of that is behind you and next week or soon there after your kid or toddler will be starting school for the first time or starting at big kid school for the first time. Either way, it's their turn to be filled with anxiety. Even the most cool NYC kid is bound to feel some jitters when faced with a completely new school situation. Talking about it can help, but sometimes it's hard to pinpoint the anxiety or get them to express what it is that's really worrying them. That's a good time to pull out the picture books.

These five great picture books are some of the best ones about starting school and will help toddlers and children prepare themselves and ease their anxiety. If only there was a picture book for school-obsessed mommies. That and a little warm milk might go a long way.
