What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

After living in New London for nearly 12 years, I'm almost ashamed to admit to how many renowned, exciting and free destinations I haven't visited yet.  Whether a shortage of time, two small children, or a combination of the two, something clouded our view of the intriguing spots in our own backyard.  I'm happy to report, we're emerging from the fog of little kid-hood, and realizing how much culture and history awaits us in Southeastern CT!  Home to the New London Naval Base in Groton, this area of the state houses much military and maritime history in a variety of spots in and around New London County.  Topping the list of must-see places to see here is the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton.

10 Best Things To Do This Spring in Eastern Connecticut

Things to do with kids: 10 Best Things To Do This Spring in Eastern Connecticut

For some, when the crocuses sprout from the ground, that's a sure indicator that spring is on its way. For us here in Eastern Connecticut, we don't necessarily pay attention to the calendar to decide if the season has changed.  We have our own barometers and signs that the warmer weather is just around the corner!  Check out some of these spring time seasonal rites of passage.

FREE Museum Days (Fairfield & New Haven Counties)

Things to do with kids: FREE Museum Days (Fairfield & New Haven Counties)

Getting out of the house is good this time of year.  Having somewhere to go that's free -- even better.  A handful of museums in Fairfield County, and neighboring New Haven County have caught on to that fact, offering up free events in the coming days, and even year-round in some cases.

Where to Go Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Where to Go Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing in Fairfield County, CT

Getting outside this time of year doesn't come naturally -- it can seem far more fun to curl up with cocoa on your couch.  But the kids (and you) NEED to get outside, breathe fresh air and take in some Vitamin D ...  the trick is finding a fun way to work up a sweat in freezing temps.  Having spent a couple years in Canada as a teen, I can tell you downhill skiing did the trick for me, but in Fairfield County that's obviously not gonna happen.  Instead, you have to get the adrenaline going by strapping on some snowshoes or cross-country skis!

New Year's Day Activities for Kids (Fairfield County)

Things to do with kids: New Year's Day Activities for Kids (Fairfield County)

Growing up, New Year's Day equated to the Rose Bowl parade and football on the tube, and the scent of pork roast and sauerkraut wafting from the kitchen.  Since my kids don't much care for any of the above, (minus the parade, which is never a guarantee on 1/1 anymore), we're gonna need a plan!  If you're gonna be staring down some squirrelly kids over your scrambled eggs, too, we've got some ideas for how to spend the day.
