A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

After living in New London for nearly 12 years, I'm almost ashamed to admit to how many renowned, exciting and free destinations I haven't visited yet.  Whether a shortage of time, two small children, or a combination of the two, something clouded our view of the intriguing spots in our own backyard.  I'm happy to report, we're emerging from the fog of little kid-hood, and realizing how much culture and history awaits us in Southeastern CT!  Home to the New London Naval Base in Groton, this area of the state houses much military and maritime history in a variety of spots in and around New London County.  Topping the list of must-see places to see here is the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton.

A Visit to the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford (and a pit stop to Avery's Sodas in New Britain)

A Visit to the Connecticut Science Center in Hartford (and a pit stop to Avery's Sodas in New Britain)

We live about an hour west of Hartford so we don't drive over very often. We happened to have to go for a doctor's appointment so I thought we should make the day of it. I had 4 boys in tow. Two of my own, one who lives with us and another who was visiting us for the week. Ages ranged from 10-14. I had posted a request on facebook to our readers, "What should I do for the day in Hartford with 4 boys?". The overwhelming response was to take them to the CT Science Center. I didn't need to be convinced. I'd heard great things about the museum and was excited to visit. I must admit that these particular boys don't LOVE going to museums and they were quasi-excited about the trip. To help contain the whining, I had bribed them with a visit to Avery's Sodas in New Britain afterwards.

Fun Day Trips In and Around CT: Part 5 of a Series - Mark Twain House and Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center

Things to do with kids: Fun Day Trips In and Around CT: Part 5 of a Series - Mark Twain House and Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center

By Shiela Hageman

Mark Twain House and Museum
351 Farmington Avenue
Hartford, Connecticut 06105
(860) 247-0998

I still remember my first visit to the Mark Twain House as a child: the creaky floors, the shine of the old chars, the thrill of walking through the rooms where the writer of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer lived. The specialness of visiting a famous writer’s home has not worn off for this generation either.

Today, visitors enjoy daily tours of the striking home (visitation is by guided tours only), which is an example of Picturesque Gothic architecture with a dramatic grand hall, a lush glass conservatory, a grand library and the handsome billiard room where Twain wrote his famous books.

Day Trip: Travel Back In Time at The Dinosaur Place in Oakdale Connecticut

Things to do with kids: Day Trip: Travel Back In Time at The Dinosaur Place in Oakdale Connecticut

Thanks to a reader tip, we recently left the city and traveled back in time to wilds of Eastern Connecticut to spend the day at The Dinosaur Place at Nature’s Art, where kids can explore a family friendly Jurassic Park style attraction.  Encounter thirty life-sized cretaceous creatures while trekking the wooded nature trails around Raptor Bay, a seven acre lake complete with its own erupting volcano.  A giant playground, an amazing maze, a super cool water play area along with exciting indoor activities (panning for gold and gem mining to name two) round out the offerings. Dinosaur Place is minutes away from Mystic, Connecticut and Rhode Island's beaches making for a perfect day trip destination or part of a weekend away.  Here’s the inside scoop on this fun prehistoric park, and tips to make the most of your time there.
