What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Arts & Crafts Birthday Parties in CT (Fairfield County)

Things to do with kids: Arts & Crafts Birthday Parties in CT (Fairfield County)

Whether your kid bedazzles like a future Betsey Johnson or just likes to make a mess with paint, glue or glitter, there's an artistic option out there for his or her next birthday party.  Yes, I said his.  Pottery is obviously gender-neutral, but even some of the others on our list consider the fact that boys have a right-brain, too.  Add in the fact that arts & crafts-based parties have built-in party favors, and something to focus that boundless energy on... just add cake and WHA-LAH!!

CT Summer Fun Expo: Family Fun in Connecticut This Summer

Things to do with kids: CT Summer Fun Expo: Family Fun in Connecticut This Summer

We are super excited to announce our first organized event here at Mommy Poppins CT. We've partnered with the Westfield CT Post mall to create a Summer Fun Expo for CT families. We are thrilled to be offering a one stop option for learning about places to have fun in CT this summer. The expo is Sunday, June 3rd from 11-4 pm in the food court area of the mall. If you drive past Target and Dick's Sporting Goods to the back parking lot, head up the ramp to the 2nd level for the closest parking to our event. There will be lots of fun for the kids including organized arts and crafts as well as entertainment by Lynn Lewis and Friends from 11:!5 to noon.

Crafty Spots for You and the Kids in Connecticut (Hartford County)

Things to do with kids: Crafty Spots for You and the Kids in Connecticut (Hartford County)

I work as an occupational therapist in a school system and we use arts and crafts daily to help students improve their fine motor skills.  Arts and crafts are so great for a child’s development and for them to gain the skills that they will need in the future. Who knew getting crafty is also healthy! If you don’t have a creative bone in your body and are unsure where to even start when it comes to helping your child with crafting there are many places around Hartford County. Read on for our list.

Countdown to Christmas: Advent Calendars

Things to do with kids: Countdown to Christmas: Advent Calendars

Waiting and preparing for Christmas can be almost as magical and fun as the holiday itself. The Advent period or the season of preparation which was originally observed in many Western Christian churches emphasizes this tradition - even without the religious content. One of the sweetest - sometimes in the literal sense of the word, too - prop of the season is the Advent calendar. Counting down the days with suspense for the big holiday rewards you with a little surprise for each day of patience in the long, cold month of December. There are many types of advent calendars and you can read more for our break down.

Make Your Own Granola Bars

Things to do with kids: Make Your Own Granola Bars

[UPDATED: August 10, 2012]

Granola bars are a snack that kids love and parents can feel good about giving their kids - or so the ads say. But many granola bars aren't much better than candy bars and are loaded with sugar, fat, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. I found a really easy recipe for granola bars on AllRecipes and I've been making our own ever since. We whip up a batch every weekend for the upcoming week - perfect for back to school time. You could also make more and freeze them. The kids love them and love making them. It's fun for them to eat healthy snacks they've made themselves.
