What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Spring and Summer Sporting Events in CT

Things to do with kids: Spring and Summer Sporting Events in CT

Having sat through 3 soccer games and 2 lacrosse games today (just a regular Saturday around here!), it seems only fitting that I sit down now to write about…athletic events!  Now, my kids didn’t catch the sports bug super early.  Nope, mine were the kids picking daisies in the midst of the kindergarten soccer field as the ball sailed right past them.

But this year, in 4th grade, my eldest has suddenly become sports obsessed.   And she’s not only obsessed with playing sports – she loves following them too.   Need Red Sox scores? She’s got ‘em.  Want to know if Chelsea beat Man U?  Look no further.  And as much as I love the Sox and Chelsea, Boston and London aren’t always so easy to get to, so we’ve found some local sports events to frequent.  Some of our spring and summer favorites:

Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do With Kids This Weekend May 18-19: Farms, Festivals, Wheel Fun Day and Outdoor Art

Things to do with kids: Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do With Kids This Weekend May 18-19: Farms, Festivals, Wheel Fun Day and Outdoor Art

One of the things I love about living in Connecticut is that I can be in downtown Hartford in ten minutes, and If I drive ten minutes in the other direction, I can be on a rural, working farm that feels like I'm far away from any hustle and bustle.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, CT has nearly 5,000 farms. They are wonderful places to show your children where our food comes from, and why local agriculture is crucial to the environment and the economy. If you would like to get out and see for yourself, check out our post on Where to See Baby Farm Animals in Fairfield County.

Springtime Visits to Baby Farm Animals in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Springtime Visits to Baby Farm Animals in Fairfield County, CT

Pretty much everything farm related makes me sneeze.  And itch.  And cough.  But in spite of my immune’s systems obvious distaste for all things farm related, I cannot help it…I love visiting area farms this time of year to see all the new, ADORABLE, animals that have been born.  And I'm guessing I'm not the only one!  Pick a beautiful day, and head out to visit some of Fairfield County’s newest - and furriest - residents at some of the following locations:

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

After living in New London for nearly 12 years, I'm almost ashamed to admit to how many renowned, exciting and free destinations I haven't visited yet.  Whether a shortage of time, two small children, or a combination of the two, something clouded our view of the intriguing spots in our own backyard.  I'm happy to report, we're emerging from the fog of little kid-hood, and realizing how much culture and history awaits us in Southeastern CT!  Home to the New London Naval Base in Groton, this area of the state houses much military and maritime history in a variety of spots in and around New London County.  Topping the list of must-see places to see here is the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton.
