What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Library Story Times in Hartford County for Babies thru age Five

Things to do with kids: Library Story Times in Hartford County for Babies thru age Five

Starting to read to your children at an early age is a great way to ignite a love for books. Ever since I was a young girl I have always enjoyed reading. Fortunately, I have passed on that quality to my own daughter. I believe reading her a bedtime story every night since she was born and all of those visits to our local library's morning story hours have really made a difference. Now she will sit entertaining herself in her room with a pile of books for hours. Although she is not old enough to understand what the words say, she looks through the pages, analyzes the pictures, and makes up her very own story. Here is compilation of fun story times in the Hartford County area.

Fairfield County Easter Egg Hunts

Things to do with kids: Fairfield County Easter Egg Hunts

Santa Claus I get. The toothy fairy, no problem. But an oversized pink bunny who lays eggs? This tradition makes no sense to me. However, with a little digging I've learned that the tradition of the Easter bunny has its roots in centuries old pagan traditions of celebrating spring and renewal. The bottom line? As long as he's bringing chocolate, this bunny is good with me. And with my kids. Happily, there are lots of opportunities in the area, so many so that we have listed even more events occurring in Fairfield County here.

Easter Egg Hunts in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Easter Egg Hunts in Fairfield County, CT

[UPDATED 3/5/13]

The Easter Bunny has some explaining to do.  Last year, that darn bunny pooped jellybeans all over my carpet (inspired by the movie Hop).  In fact, my kids were so disgusted that they no longer have any love lost for either jellybeans or the Easter bunny.  To warm back up to the furry fellow, we’re planning on hitting not one, but several, local Egg Hunts in hopes that the Easter Bunny will redeem himself.  Note to self…no jellybeans! You can find even more events in Fairfield County here.

Where to Meet Santa Claus in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Where to Meet Santa Claus in Fairfield County, CT

Oh, how I've dreamed of that iconic child-with-Santa photo that I could drop into our annual holiday card!   But sadly, it's not to be yet again this holiday season. Nope, I"ve got a five year with an acute case of  Santa-phobia.  With no recovery in site.

But happily for the rest of you,  Santa Claus is coming to town!  Er, towns, that is.  Yes, there are lots of towns in Fairfield County where you can and your kiddos can visit with Santa.  And please, when you visit with him, put in a good word for my family!

Great Birthday Cake and Cupcake Bakeries in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Great Birthday Cake and Cupcake Bakeries in Fairfield County, CT

Great birthday traditions start with...great birthday cake.  As children, my brothers and I were allowed a piece of birthday cake for breakfast the day after our birthday. Many years later, I now know that this tradition no doubt started because we interrupted my dad surreptitiously pilfering birthday cake one morning.  But intentionally started or not (more likely!) it’s a tradition that has stuck.  In our house, it’s birthday cake for breakfast.  And as breakfast is the most important meal of the day, finding a delectable cake is critical!

Try one of these local bakeries for delicious cakes or cupcakes:
