What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Eastern Connecticut Family Guide

Connecticut is a combination of accessible small cities, seacoast charm and rural New England beauty.

This "quiet corner" of Connecticut isn't so quiet by this mommy's calculation. The scenic byways, Native American culture, seaports, loads of areas of historic interest as well as a great waterfront gives us tons of stuff to cheer about. With the famous Mystic Seaport and Mystic Aquarium as well as the world's largest Native American Museum, there's always something fun going on for the kids in Eastern Connecticut.

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

A Day Trip to The USS Nautilus Submarine Force Museum in New London County

After living in New London for nearly 12 years, I'm almost ashamed to admit to how many renowned, exciting and free destinations I haven't visited yet.  Whether a shortage of time, two small children, or a combination of the two, something clouded our view of the intriguing spots in our own backyard.  I'm happy to report, we're emerging from the fog of little kid-hood, and realizing how much culture and history awaits us in Southeastern CT!  Home to the New London Naval Base in Groton, this area of the state houses much military and maritime history in a variety of spots in and around New London County.  Topping the list of must-see places to see here is the Historic Ship Nautilus and Submarine Force Museum in Groton.

Best Mother's Day Brunches in New London County

Things to do with kids: Best Mother's Day Brunches in New London County

Mother's Day now out ranks other occasions in my life to be celebrated, since motherhood is certainly my most important accomplishment to date.  Each year, I anticipate the handmade cards, coffee in bed, and few, extra moments of sleep.  But almost as much as I excitedly wait for those things, I count down the days to one of the best meals of the year: Mother's Day brunch.  We reserve a brunch outing for this one Sunday in May, and include our entire extended family, which makes it even more memorable.  Interested in toasting Mom with a mimosa or omelet made to order?  The selection of Mother's Day brunch spots in New London county is fantastic.

Things to do with kids: 10 Best Things To Do This Spring in Eastern Connecticut

For some, when the crocuses sprout from the ground, that's a sure indicator that spring is on its way. Martial Arts Classes for Kids in Eastern CT

Things to do with kids: Martial Arts Classes for Kids in Eastern CT

The first time Max broke a board in his Tae Kwon Do class, I nearly fainted.  Outside of class, his 3 year old brain had trouble focusing on much of anything, as 3 year olds usually do.  But, as he walked through the doors of the dojo, he switched on a laser-like attention span we'd never seen.  The Martial Arts, in its various forms, offer both fitness of the body and mind, something not found in many kid-friendly activities.  If you've considered enrolling your kiddo, here's some class options around Eastern Connecticut!

Hear that?  That's the sound of warmer weather on her way back to New England!  Spring seems to be taking her sweet time arriving in Connecticut, but soon enough, we'll be back into the swing of monkeying around at the playground rather than hibernating indoors.  For this Mom of two very energetic kiddos, that can't come soon enough!  From beach front plays areas to boundless play scapes accessible to all abilities, New London County is home to some of the most amazing playgrounds anywhere!

Sports Camps in New London County

Things to do with kids: Sports Camps in New London County

My twins turn 8 this summer and we're embarking on our first foray into kid sports!  I'll admit, this Momma was not at all prepared for the idea of my kiddos competing in a sport of any kind, but I'll happily report the benefits of participating far outweigh any negatives.  Now, our camp options for summer vacation just exploded to include sports camps!  They offer a fantastic opportunity for your active kiddo to spend time honing their skills of the sport or activity they love or to learn the fundamentals of something new.  Lucky for us, living in New London county, with our miles of coastline, a host of recreational areas and award winning facilities catering to a wide spectrum of sports and abilities, this area boasts a gold mine of summer sport camp options

Sleepaway Summer Camps in Eastern CT

Things to do with kids: Sleepaway Summer Camps in Eastern CT

I never dreamed I might entertain the idea of sleepaway camp for my not-quite-8-year-old twins.  Too young, right?  Actually, no.  Many trusted, accredited camps offer introductory programs for kiddos as young as 7 years old, and begin a tradition of returning to camp long into their high school days.  Interested in taking the leap into an overnight, resident camp?  Take a peek at what the Eastern part of Connecticut has to offer!

Nature and Science Summer Camps in New London County

Things to do with kids: Nature and Science Summer Camps in New London County

My son, at 6 years old, declared his intention to attend MIT after high school, class of 2027.  He lives and breathes science, so most summer camps involving athletic activities don't appeal much to his interests.  Sound familiar?  If your little nature or science buffs need a fun camp experience this summer, New London county offers a wide range of camps just for them! And some even offer discounts and scholarships.
