Summer Sports Camps in New Haven County: Gymnastics, Squash, Tennis, Baseball, and Ballet

Going to camp has been the answer to summer fun for generations, and to many kids it is an exciting right of passage. Today, summer camps have become more specialized, allowing children with diverse interests to find an activity that suits their personality. For the sporty types, here's a list of summer camp options in the New Haven area.

West Haven Parks & Recreation
This venue offers two six-week sessions for children ages 6-12. Activities include sports and registration opens March 1, 2016, for residents, and May 10 for non-residents. The first session runs July 5-15, and the second session takes place July 18-29. Camp Jr., for ages 5 and 6, also kicks off July 5 and includes swimming at the high school pool.

US Sports Institute 
This camp is sponsoring a sports program for little ones, boys and girls, ages 3-5. It is meant to be an overview of popular sports such as soccer, T-ball, basketball, and hockey. Perfectly safe for 3-5 year olds, the activities are based upon popular preschool characters (Finding Nemo, Shrek and Sponge Bob feature prominently). The camp promotes hand-eye coordination, and blends it nicely with movement and balance.

“Double the Fun”
Milford Indoor Tennis and Trumbull Racquet Club are summer tennis camps designed for players ages 5-17. The programs help children develop a love of the game, while establishing a strong athletic foundation. You can choose one of nine one-week sessions starting June 22, 2016, and may choose a three-hour, or four-hour camp. Bonus: one time per season, you may enroll two season for the price of one.

Summer Squash Camps at Yale
Using methods similar to those used by Yale Squash teams, this camp aims to teach campers about the game of squash and how to attain peak performance. Courses are a week long. The first is June 19-24, 2016; Week 2 (pre-season training) runs July 17-22. Campers will be taught by full-time coaching professionals from elite institutions, including Yale, Harvard, and Columbia universities.

New Haven Ballet Summer Programs 
New Haven Ballet offers two ballet camps for young children. The camp for ages 3-7 features dance, rhythm, and music focusing on creative storytelling as well as crafts. Tuition is $90 per week. The Student Division Summer Intensives offers classical ballet training for ages 8+. There is also Open Division Summer Classes for students 16 years and older, with and without previous ballet, modern or jazz experience. These classes are offered at their studios on a drop-in basis.

New Dimension Gymnastics 
Session 1 of this nine-week series begins June 24. Each week is themed to make it even more special. Themes include "Space", "Disney" and "Hollywood Week". Children will, in addition to gymnastics, play games, make crafts and even have the opportunity to climb a rock wall.
