Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT with Kids This Weekend January 12-13: Ice Fishing, Seals, Scavenger Hunts and Legos

1/9/13 - By Pam Hegner

I grew up in Florida, so the winter months are tough for me, especially when I feel cooped up with an active five-year-old boy. I plan to hit the pool with him, so he doesn't get rusty come May. For swimming fun, check out our ideas on Indoor Swim Spots and Lessons in Hartford County. It is never too soon to think about your summer plans, so our Sleepaway Summer Camp post will help you get a jump on things.

But there is plenty to do right now, so read our guide on Things To Do With Kids This Winter in CT and our CT Skiing post. Not a skiier? No problem. Saturday, get bundled up and try your hand at The White Memorial Conservation Center's Family Ice Fishing Workshop in Litchfield.  On Sunday, the entire family will enjoy a brisk adventure in search of unique wildlife at Hammonasset Beach State Park's Seal Search.

Mashantucket Pequot Museum hosts the Fry Bread Sundae Social and Scavenger Hunt. Explore the museum while you search for clues, and then at the end enjoy a treat. Fry Bread is a Native-American type of flatbread, like fried dough.

How about a trip to France this weekend? The Wadsworth Atheneum's presents "Bonjour," as part of the free second Saturdays program. Visit with Characters from "Babar," and enjoy French dance, music and art.  Also in Hartford, your favorite Disney friends take stage at the XL Center's Disney on Ice: Worlds of Fantasy.

Winter is a great time to take advantage of the theatre options around the state. "Bubblemania" showcases giant bubbles and their unique properties at the Hamden Arts Commission. "Beauty and the Beast" starts a month-long run at Bridgeport's Downtown Cabaret Theatre. Norwich's Spirit of Broadway welcomes "Dani Girl," an upbeat, entertaining musical about a nine-year-old's battle with cancer. It is a comedic way for young ones to deal with a serious subject.

Hands-on Lego building, tutorials and galleries will keep little hands and minds busy at Discovery Museum's Block Party in Bridgeport. Enthusiasts will also want to check out the Lego Robotics and Motorized Legos Workshop in Fairfield. All ages will love the Annual Shoreline Train Show in Branford, featuring models and layouts as well as door prizes.
