YMCAs Fairfield County

1/26/14 - By Brandee Gilmore

In most places, the YMCA is a pretty straightforward concept.  It’s an affordable place for the family to get fit and stay fit, to introduce sports to your kids, and perhaps most beautiful of all, members with young children can take advantage of free childcare during workouts (except Stamford).  As with many things, though, Fairfield County is a little different.  There are towns where it’s simple — Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Westport-Weston, and Wilton all operate as independent entities, where members join and generally only EVER go to that particular Y.  (More about reciprocity agreements later).  However, there are at least 11 other YMCAs across the county that act more like conglomerates — and members are encouraged to take advantage of different amenities at different locations.  Problem is, who has the time to figure out what is where, digging around in several different YMCA websites?  Mommy Poppins, that’s who.  Here’s the rundown on what each Y offers, in one place -- incidentally, a great launching pad for your comparison shopping of gymnastics classes and swimming lessons.

Regional YMCA of Western CT & Eastern Putnam County
Danbury, Brookfield, Bethel
The Regional Y services 22 towns from its three main locations.  They offer fitness and swimming facilities at the Brookfield Greenknoll (2 Huckleberry Hill Rd, Brookfield, CT 06804, 203-775-4444) and Danbury Boughton Street (12 Boughton Street, Danbury, CT 06810, 203-744-1000) locations, art and youth development programs at ESCAPE to the Arts in downtown Danbury (293 Main Street, Danbury, CT 06810, 203-794-1413), four summer camps, and childcare/education centers in Bethel and Brookfield.

Central CT Coast YMCA
The Central Connecticut Coast Y is massive.  There are eight traditional Y’s, three ‘centers’ and Camp Hi-Rock located in the Berkshires in Mt. Washington, Massachusetts.  All told, 25 towns fall within the reach of this conglomerate YMCA.  The cross-access membership is critical here due to some unique programs, and for Lakewood-Trumbull, the lack of an indoor pool.  Many flock to Milford’s (Woodruff) state-of-the-art facility … others may save the trip and use Bridgeport or Fairfield.  On the flip side, Lakewood-Trumbull boasts a gymnastics program and a Camp and Outdoor Center (summer memberships additional).  Other notable programs in the Central CT Coast Y include Latin dance at Bridgeport, a zip line and ropes course at Hamden/New Haven, and a climbing wall and archery at Soundview Family (Branford), which opened in 2010.

To further confuse the issue, the YMCA has two tiers of reciprocity in New England.  The first is a national program called A.W.A.Y.  This is designed for business travelers, or the holidays when members are more than 50 miles from their ‘home’ Y (Darien YMCA, however, requires visitors with a ‘home Y’ within a 100 miles to pay 50% of the guest fee).  Program classes, camps and babysitting are not covered.  Some YMCAs have restrictions on when outside members can use the facility, so people are encouraged to call in advance for location details.  The second, and newer, reciprocity program is called ‘My Y is Every Y’.  Basically it entitles any Y member anywhere in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island to use any Y in those states (except West Suburban and Martha’s Vineyard in MA).  But again, it is each locations prerogative to restrict and place conditions on the program.  New Canaan, for instance, only allows outsiders to use their facility 12 times a year, and at restricted times of day.
