Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT With Kids This Weekend January 19-20: Winterfest, Vintage Airplanes and MLK Day Events
During the summer it is easy for my family to come up with fun activities on the weekend. The winter months seem to take more effort to find new and exciting things to do as a family. However, if you know where to look, there are quite a few interesting things to do this time of year. We've done our homework and have come up with some terrific ideas for your family this weekend. For starters, check out or list of Favorite Indoor Play Spaces in Fairfield County , our CT Winter Fun Guide as well as our list of Parades and Fun Events for MLK Day in Hartford County.
Guided trail walks, an animal encounter, fly fishing demonstrations and smores are among the activities at Winterfest. This free event takes place at the Earthplace Nature Discovery Center in Westport on Saturday.
Learn about animals at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center's Creature Feature or the Reptile and Amphibian program at the Westbrook Public Library.
The clear cold nights of winter make for great stargazing. Learn about the Winter Constellations at the New Pond Farm Observatory.
Drop in for crafts at the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington, CT.
Imagine what it would be like to fly a vintage airplane at Open Cockpit Days at the New England Air Museum. Visitors can climb inside the cockpits of up to ten vintage aircraft, watch a model airplane show and participate in hands on activities for kids.
If there's some room in your budget to splurge on a memorable event, consider getting a group together for a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride through the snow at Loon Meadow Farm in Litchfield County.
All weekend long there are fun and educational programs celebrating the life and message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Fairfield Museum and History Center has discounted admission and programs throughout the weekend. New Haven's Yale Peabody Museum has a full schedule of events and the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford offers free admission and special children's tours throughout the day on Monday.
Another option if your kids are off from school on Monday is to visit the Stamford Museum and Nature Center for their Winter Break Out Day. Kids can build with Legos, explore barns, visit animals, build an outdoor fort and enjoy ice cream sundaes. The Beardsley Zoo is offering $5 admission to all visitors on MLK Day.
New activities are added to our Event Calendar each day, so be sure to check back often. Don't miss any of our updates and giveaways, like us on Facebook and follow Mommy Poppins CT on Twitter and Pinterest. For party planning check out our fabulous Party Guide!
Have a wonderful winter weekend with your family.
