Lectures, Panels and Advice for Parenting in Fairfield County, CT

9/9/13 - By Katie McKnight

As my eldest started middle school last week (gulp), one thing became immediately apparent – my husband I are in way over our heads.   The principal at our school was throwing out words like sex-ed, internet safety, locker combinations, and body piercings.  As we looked around at the panic stricken faces of our fellow 5th grade parents, we knew that we needed to learn. A lot.  And fast. Someone has to know how to parent a middle-schooler, right?  I was pleased to find that there are several organizations in Fairfield County that offer classes or workshops designed to help parents navigate these crazy times.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

New Canaan CARES: CARES offers consistently thorough and informative lectures on a variety of topics pertinent to parents.  Their upcoming Cyber Safety and Digital Footprint will be critical for me in crafting our household policies regarding the Internet and social media usage.  The lecture is being offered at New Canaan’s Waveny House on October 1st, from 7:30-9pm.

Sports Injury Prevention Lecture, Wilton Library, Wilton, CT: I have been amazed at how quickly we have progressed from having little kids chasing butterflies in the soccer field to having 4 practices a week for soccer.  Given how many sports kids are playing at younger and younger ages, I’ll definitely be checking out this lecture on Sports Injuries, conducted by a chiropractor with more than 30 years of experience in the field of sports injury and prevention, will be held Tuesday, September 17th, from 7-8:30 pm at the Wilton Library.  Registration is encouraged.

YMCA Parent Awareness Program, Darien, CT: The Y’s Parent Awareness program seeks to help educate parents as to the issues that kids will grapple with through their formative years.  Check their calendar for a full list of upcoming events; of particular interest to me is the upcoming panel on Eliminating Stress and Creating Balance in your Child’s Life.  It will be held on November 12th at 7pm (for parents with kids in elementary schools) and again on Tuesday, November 19th (for parents with kids in middle school).  Both will be held at the Darien Library.
