Holiday Craft Workshops in Fairfield County: Gingerbread Houses, Ornaments, Holiday Cookies, and More

I have a confession to make: I suffer from art anxiety. Although I've managed a few Wee Work projects with my kids (I highly recommend the Sharpie tie dye t-shirts), when it's time for serious crafting, I look for resources out of the home. Luckily, this holiday season in Fairfield County, there are all kinds of crafting workshops that suit all ages and price points. Here are some of my favorites:

Candy House Workshops
A favorite part of the Holiday Express train show at the Fairfield Museum and History Center, these two workshops on Saturday, December 13th at 10 am and noon give kids a chance to decorate holiday houses with icing, graham-cracker roofs, gumdrop windows, licorice fences, and more. Pre-registration suggested. $10 members; $15 non-members.

Children's Wreathmaking
Head over to the Darien Nature Center on December 14th where children will decorate a felt or live wreath and enjoy a sleigh ride, refreshments, and a visit with Mr. Claus. Children under 4 will be working with felt wreaths. Children over 4 will decorate live wreaths. Pre-registration required. $30 per child.

Elf Workshops at Stew Leonards
Every weekday from December 2nd until December 11th, Stew Leonards in Danbury is offering free workshops for kids age 4-10. Ranging from wooden ornaments to snow globes, these fun crafts will give kids a memorable souvenir from this holiday season. Register in advance at customer service. Free.

Elf Workshops at Stepping Stones
Among the many special holiday experiences at Stepping Stones is the fun-filled elf workshop where kids can tinker up a treasured gift to for a loved one. From 11 am to noon, the workshop is included with museum admission. Registration is not required, but it is first come-first served. December 2-December 18th (except Sundays).

Gingerbread House Workshops at Green Moon
Children ages 2-7 will create an amazing gingerbread house with frosting, and all kinds of candy from gummies to m&ms. The helpful staff at Green Moon take care of the mess, and you enjoy a gorgeous final product--all wrapped and ready to take home the same day. Weekdays December 2-December 12th and 1:30 to 3 pm and 4-5:30 pm. Pre-registration required. $45 per person.

Holiday Cookie Workshop at JAM
At this fantastic workshop on December 14th in Junior Art and Music's newish space in Darien, kids age 3 and up will decorate 6 ginormous cookies with some serious bling and bring them home to Santa in a hand-painted box. Pre-registration required. $45 per child.

Holiday Ornament Workshop
Join the New Canaan Historical Society on December 22nd to get into the holiday spirit with this afterschool workshop that includes crafts, treats, and stories. Reservations required.

Makerbot: Design Your Own Ornaments
Are your kids more interested in computers than old fashioned arts and crafts? Check out this interactive introduction to 3D design and printing at the MakerBot store in Greenwich, where kids ages 7-14 (there is a separate workshop for kids over 14) will be guided through the process of creating their own holiday ornaments. Pre-registration required. December 14th and 21st. $25 per person.

Wreathfest
Family wreath making days at Woodcok Nature Center last from noon to 4 pm and are open house, so you can stop by anytime (plan to arrive no later than 3 pm). You will decorate a balsam wreath with natural dried flowers, grasses, nuts, fruits, berries and cones, and you will take your lovely prize home. There will be hot cocoa served! December 6th and 13th. Registration not required. $40 per wreath.
