A Visit to Kids Down on Main Street in Watertown, Connecticut

4/4/14 - By Sherry Pardy

As a Mom of two high energy, press-all-the-buttons, no-volume-control kids, I am eternally grateful for the few establishments that cater to us. There exist few places where a parent can walk in the door and immediately feel at ease letting their kids roam, explore and press ALL the buttons on everything in the place. A place where no one will tell them to pipe down, slow down, and don't touch that.To find one of those spots in nearby Watertown, CT, well...that's like winning the Momma lottery. Enter, Kids Down on Main Street.

Kids Down on Main Street sits, well, parallel to Main Street, on Depot Street, in Watertown, Connecticut, just off Route 63.  As soon as you walk in the door, the staff greets you with huge smiles and an invitation to come in and PLAY.  Play is certainly the order of the day, and the setup at Down on Main Street (I'll admit, it was hard getting the Bob Seeger song out of my head!) certainly lends itself to creative, imaginative fun for kiddos and Mom's and Dads!  Because my son adores cars, we first headed over to the auto body shop, where he concocted a whole scenario about two Hot Wheels cars in desperate need of repair, and away he went, lost in his made up story, having the time of his life.  My daughter, indifferent to mechanics, invited me to the coffee shop for a cup of joe.  I happily obliged, and was informed she had "work to do."

My kids are 8, and on the much older side of the spectrum for Kids Down on Main Street, which is targeted to kids between 1 and 7 years of age.  But, once a Thomas the Tank Engine fan, always a fan, and my son gravitated right to the rideable Thomas toy and train area.  We took a quick "shopping trip" through the Main Street Market, and just before we left, since we're all animal lovers, we played vet at the pet palace, helping some stuffed animals in need of pretend treatment.  We spent a total of about 90 minutes at Down on Main Street, and it was well worth the $13.00 admission for both kiddos.  (First child is $7.00, each additional sibling is $6.00 for stay and play.)

The space is pretty large, especially from a kid's perspective, and this place packs a punch in the activity department, too.  Down on Main Street hosts seasonal events, art and music classes, and is available for birthday parties, too.  For our friends with special needs, they host a sensory/art class every Wednesday.  For parents, there's free WIFI, charging stations for phones and iPads, and a limited selection of warm beverages to enjoy while the kids safely play.

If you're in the neighborhood, definitely stop by.  They're open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am-5pm, Friday until 3pm.

A few hours of hard play works up quite the appetite.  Just down Main Street, is G's Burgers, where everyone can get their favorite toppings on a burger, cheese fries, chili, the works.  If you've got room, walk across the restaurant to Carvel for some ice cream.  Or, if table service is more your style, stay right in Depot Square and head to Gayle's Depot Square Farm Shoppe for huge breakfasts served all day, a triple decker sandwich, or try some fried dough.
