What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

The LIttle Kid

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Summer Day Camps in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Summer Day Camps in Fairfield County, CT

I find myself in new summer camp territory this year.  My 9 year old is old enough for sleep away camp, but her mother… ahem…isn’t quite ready to send her off.  But as I think she’s outgrown our local rec camp, I’ve been looking into some different alternatives.  I want her camp experience this year to really be a growing and learning experience for her, a chance for her to try something new and different.  And so we're considering some of the following:

Girls Only Sleepaway Summer Camps in Connecticut

Things to do with kids: Girls Only Sleepaway Summer Camps in Connecticut

Same sex camps come with lots of benefits. Without the male species at camp, tweens and teens can focus more on girl bonding and the task at hand (while avoid getting distracted by "that cute boy with beautiful blue eyes"). Girls can create everlasting friendships while experiencing strong female role models. Here's a list of girls only sleep away summer camps in CT, some of which are traditional, artsy and/or sportsy.

Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT With Kids This Weekend March 9-10: St. Patrick's Parades, Hoops, Maple and Art Festivals

Things to do with kids: Mostly Free and Fun Things to do in CT With Kids This Weekend March 9-10: St. Patrick's Parades, Hoops, Maple and Art Festivals

March 17 has taken on a different feel since having children. Gone are the days of kegs and eggs at 8am followed by a day of adult debauchery. But St. Patrick's Day is now one of my favorite kid-friendly holidays, because you can get creative with turning everything green, and introducing lads and lasses to Irish music and culture.

St. Patrick’s Day Events, Parades and Dinners in New Haven County

Things to do with kids: St. Patrick’s Day Events, Parades and Dinners in New Haven County

“Erin go bragh” a phrase expressing allegiance to Ireland, has become synonymous with St. Patty’s Day which many here in America (even if there is no drop of Irish blood in their veins) love to celebrate. Are you wondering what to do with the kids on St. Patrick’s Day? Well, considering its mainly an adult holiday, family-friendly activities are difficult but not impossible to find. I have found a HUGE historic parade and a couple of places to get your fill of corned beef and cabbage! So put on your green garb and take a look!

New London County Arts and Drama Summer Camps

Things to do with kids: New London County Arts and Drama Summer Camps

The last time I checked the calendar, it read October. Today, it tells me spring lurks around the corner and just over three months stand between me and the end of school! After recovering from that sobering realization, my thoughts turned towards warmer weather, vacations, and those inevitable moans and groans of summertime boredom. In my house, idle kids mean an unhappy Mom, so summer day camps abound! Luckily, here in New London county, our neck of the woods boasts plenty of opportunities for our creative kiddos.

Great Kids' Shopping in Fairfield County: Toys, Clothing and Baby Gear

Things to do with kids: Great Kids' Shopping in Fairfield County: Toys, Clothing and Baby Gear

I hate to admit it, but I have become a snob.  A children’s clothing and toy store snob.  With three kids, I have absolutely had it with toys comprised of no fewer than five hundred tiny plastic pieces that invariably find their way under my feet. No more!  I’m putting my foot down and investing in far fewer, but higher quality, toys and clothes for my kids.  To that end, I’ve been scouting out stores in Fairfield County where you can find some inventive, sturdy, and long-lasting toys and clothes for your brood.

Indoor Water Park and Swimming Pools in New Haven County

Things to do with kids: Indoor Water Park and Swimming Pools in New Haven County

When it’s 20 degrees out and your kids are “trying on” their summer swim suits you may think they are going crazy or have cabin fever!  Well, I’m not an expert, but I’m guessing the latter is the case.  Make their day and take them to one of the indoor swimming options I have found in New Haven County.  Your kids will thank you!
