What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do With Kids In CT This Easter Weekend March 30-31: Egg Hunts, Bunny Trains and Spring Hikes

Things to do with kids: Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do With Kids In CT This Easter Weekend March 30-31: Egg Hunts, Bunny Trains and Spring Hikes

I've got a bone to pick with Puxatawney Phil.  That groundhog predicted an early spring however here we are in the last week of March and there's still snow on my lawn.  Thankfully things are about to change. Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid 50s this weekend and I'm very excited about spending some time enjoying the outdoors.  My favorite part of Easter is watching the kids run around the yard collecting eggs and then playing some basketball or soccer as a family.

Sleepaway Summer Camps in Eastern CT

Things to do with kids: Sleepaway Summer Camps in Eastern CT

I never dreamed I might entertain the idea of sleepaway camp for my not-quite-8-year-old twins.  Too young, right?  Actually, no.  Many trusted, accredited camps offer introductory programs for kiddos as young as 7 years old, and begin a tradition of returning to camp long into their high school days.  Interested in taking the leap into an overnight, resident camp?  Take a peek at what the Eastern part of Connecticut has to offer!

Horseback Riding Camps in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Horseback Riding Camps in Fairfield County, CT

I am DELIGHTED that my 9-year old girl is far more interested in horses and dolphins than boys (not counting the boys of  One Direction, of course).  Needless to say, my husband is equally delighted.  And while I have been unable to find a dolphin riding camp in CT for this summer (her first choice), I have found lots of options for horseback riding camps in Fairfield County.  I'm hoping that one of these will fit our summer schedule and prolong her interest in horses rather than 10-year old boys.  Wish me luck!

Summer Horseback Riding Camps in New Haven County

Things to do with kids: Summer Horseback Riding Camps in New Haven County

There are not many children who don’t like horses. Some boys envision themselves to be cowboys and some girls will think of themselves as a pretty princess with her noble steed. Or a cowgirl or cowboy! The possibilities are endless. Wherever their imagination is taking them, rest assured if your young one has expressed an interest in equestrian pursuits, you can find a camp to occupy their summer and make their dreams come true here in New Haven County.

Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do In CT With Kids This Weekend March 23-24: Easter Egg Hunts, Parades, Touch-A-Truck & Fairs

Things to do with kids: Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do In CT With Kids This Weekend March 23-24: Easter Egg Hunts, Parades, Touch-A-Truck & Fairs

While I lived down south, spring meant pretty pastel sundresses and hiding eggs for the kids in fluffy, green grass. Connecticut welcomed the new season this week with a dose of the white stuff, so hopefully the snow can be cleared in time for the full slate of fun this weekend. Actually, some events may have been postponed so check with venues before venturing out.

Fairfield County Easter Egg Hunts

Things to do with kids: Fairfield County Easter Egg Hunts

Santa Claus I get. The toothy fairy, no problem. But an oversized pink bunny who lays eggs? This tradition makes no sense to me. However, with a little digging I've learned that the tradition of the Easter bunny has its roots in centuries old pagan traditions of celebrating spring and renewal. The bottom line? As long as he's bringing chocolate, this bunny is good with me. And with my kids. Happily, there are lots of opportunities in the area, so many so that we have listed even more events occurring in Fairfield County here.

Nature and Science Summer Camps in New London County

Things to do with kids: Nature and Science Summer Camps in New London County

My son, at 6 years old, declared his intention to attend MIT after high school, class of 2027.  He lives and breathes science, so most summer camps involving athletic activities don't appeal much to his interests.  Sound familiar?  If your little nature or science buffs need a fun camp experience this summer, New London county offers a wide range of camps just for them! And some even offer discounts and scholarships.
