What We're Reading

For 0-10 year olds

This is one of our favorite
family story books of all time. It explains how mama has unconditional love for her dear one.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one. (grade 3 and up)

Bad Kitty is hilarious as he works his way through an alphabet of naughtiness.

10 Great Things to do in Fairfield County this Spring

Things to do with kids: 10 Great Things to do in Fairfield County this Spring

Clearly the dramatic weather changes are confusing all of us a bit. Yesterday my youngest sauntered off to the bus wearing Daisy Duke shorts with hand me down Ugg boots and miss-matched mittens.  Is it winter? Spring?  SUMMER???

Well, despite the 75 plus degrees here in CT earlier this week, it is officially springtime, which may well be my favorite season.  Below you'll find a list of some of this family’s favorite things to do in Fairfield County this spring – and whether you’re wearing Uggs or flip flops, I bet you’ll enjoy a few of these outings too!:

Does your youngster have a flair for the dramatic? I think all of our kids do at one point or another, but some children have a yen to be on stage or in front of the camera. Martial Arts Classes for Kids in Eastern CT

Things to do with kids: Martial Arts Classes for Kids in Eastern CT

The first time Max broke a board in his Tae Kwon Do class, I nearly fainted.  Outside of class, his 3 year old brain had trouble focusing on much of anything, as 3 year olds usually do.  But, as he walked through the doors of the dojo, he switched on a laser-like attention span we'd never seen.  The Martial Arts, in its various forms, offer both fitness of the body and mind, something not found in many kid-friendly activities.  If you've considered enrolling your kiddo, here's some class options around Eastern Connecticut!

Fantastic Shopping Excursion to SoNo Marketplace in Fairfield County, CT

Things to do with kids: Fantastic Shopping Excursion to SoNo Marketplace in Fairfield County, CT

Ugh.  Here I was trying to think of a fantastic spring day trip to take with my nearly ten year old and where does she ask to go? THE MALL!!!!.  The birthplace of bad spending habits and teenage attitudes.  Bastion of bad taste and fast food.  Anywhere, I said to my teeny bopper, anywhere but the mall.

Naturally, the more I argued against it, the more my pre-teen daughter wanted that trip to the mall.  Fast forward several arguments and a battle of wills, and we found a brilliant – brilliant!- alternative … South Norwalk’s SoNo Marketplace.

This new, dare I say hip, market is a converted old warehouse in South Norwalk, and its more than 40 vendors offer gourmet food, gifts, clothing, art and toys.  The vendors are largely located in stalls throughout the space, and there are great indoor and outdoor spaces for dining and relaxing.

Mostly Free and Fun Things to Do in CT With Kids This Weekend April 6-7: Autism Awareness, Scavenger Hunts and Expos

Things to do with kids: Mostly Free and Fun Things to Do in CT With Kids This Weekend April 6-7: Autism Awareness, Scavenger Hunts and Expos

April is Autism Awareness Month, and according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it affects 1 in 88 children, making it the fastest-growing developmental disability in the country, with no cure. The CDC also reports it can cost a family an average of $60,000 a year.  I know several wonderful children who have been diagnosed, and their parents want awareness, research and resources to help their young ones live long, meaningful lives.
